Dies at the age of 84, Birçe Hasko, an icon of Albanian cinema!

Has passed away today, May 23, the well-known Albanian actor of cinematography, Birçe Hasko, one of the most beloved and respected figures of Albanian stage and screen.

The sad news was announced by actor Mevlan Shanaj.

“Birçe Hasko has gone. The actor who left behind a respected name, a great name in Albanian cinematography. The Labi Birçe Hasko is gone. The man who gave concreteness to the craft of acting is gone. The one who had humor and strictness as part of his character is gone. Farewell, my friend and collaborator,” he wrote on social media.

Hasko was known for his outstanding performances, masterfully portraying popular southern Albanian characters, making them unforgettable for the Albanian audience.

He was born in the village of Dukat, Vlora region, on March 15, 1942. In 1961 he graduated from the “Jani Minga” pedagogical high school. After graduation, he worked for several years as a teacher and school principal in the villages of Amanikaj, Nivicë in Tepelenë, and Poro in Vlora until 1965.

He later studied acting at the Higher Institute of Arts in Tirana (1965–1969). After graduating, from 1969 onward, he worked as a lecturer in acting at the Academy of Arts, later serving as dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts between 1989–1994.

On stage and screen, Hasko stood out especially in comic and popular character roles.

Throughout his career, he performed in 32 film roles.


His acting style was characterized by spontaneous humor, vivid character building, expressive mimicry, and a strong sense of rhythm in performance. His use of dialect, especially from Labëria, gave his roles a distinctive artistic identity.

In addition to acting, he made a major contribution as a teacher, preparing future actors and directing numerous stage pieces and 18 full dramatic works. On November 13, 1989, he was awarded the title “Merited Artist,” in 1995 he received the academic title “Professor,” and later he was honored with the title “Great Master.”
