A few days ago, earthquakes began in Santorini and the surrounding islands in the Aegean Sea. The strongest earthquake was recorded on Wednesday, with a magnitude of 5.2, but there were no injuries or material damage, except for landslides, which so far have not caused any problems. Greek scientists and seismologists are united in their assessments regarding the possibility of further seismic tremors in the region.
The situation is under continuous monitoring by the Greek Committee for Seismic and Volcanic Risk. According to them, tremors of similar magnitude may continue for several days, or a stronger earthquake could occur.
However, the head of the committee stated that the likelihood of an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 or 6.5 was very low, while an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 remains more probable. Experts explain that earthquakes with magnitudes of 6 and 6.5 differ significantly in the energy they release.
According to seismologists, the tremors may continue for 1 to 2 weeks, and another concern is the possibility of reactivating the Santorini volcano, which has shown previous activity.
Nevertheless, scientists assess that these earthquakes are unlikely to trigger a volcanic eruption.
