The scenarios for the evolution of seismic activity in the Cyclades were analyzed by Efthymios Lekkas, the coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Committee for Risk and Crisis Management at the National University of Athens. He assessed the current situation, emphasizing that despite the observed seismic activity, there are no indications of a volcanic eruption in the near future. Meanwhile, observations show ground movements of up to 8 centimeters, reflecting geological changes in the region.
Lekkas presented several possible scenarios for the development of the situation, explaining the time scale and necessary operational planning for each case. According to him, the most likely scenario is a gradual de-escalation of the phenomenon, meaning that seismic activity will decrease over time without posing a significant risk to the area.
The second scenario, less likely but still considerable, is an earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale or slightly higher. In this case, there is a 4% chance that 200-300 buildings could collapse, which would require an immediate response from authorities and emergency teams. For this reason, operational teams are on standby to address this risk, and measures are being taken to prevent access to hazardous areas and limit overcrowding in the most sensitive regions.
Regarding volcanic activity, Lekkas emphasized that there is no imminent risk of a volcanic eruption. He pointed out that the “Columbus” volcano, one of the most significant in the area, is not expected to erupt for at least the next 10,000 years. At the same time, discussions about a new volcano emerging relate to a phenomenon that could occur in 200,000 years, meaning there is no immediate cause for concern.
Considering all these factors, authorities are working on operational planning based on the most realistic and likely scenarios. Their approach aims to minimize risks for the population, while continuous monitoring of seismic activity remains a priority. Modern technologies and scientific observations are helping to analyze ground movements more accurately, ensuring that all necessary measures are in place to prevent any potential negative impact.
For now, citizens are advised to follow official guidelines and stay informed about new developments. Although the situation requires attention and vigilance, experts are confident that it is under control and that no catastrophic scenario is expected in the near future.
