An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Santorini last night, causing concern in the surrounding areas and being felt as far as Athens. According to reports from Protothema.gr, the seismic tremor occurred at 21:05 local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 21 kilometers southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos, at a focal depth of 11.2 kilometers.
The main earthquake was preceded by several smaller tremors. At 20:53, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the same area, while earlier, at 20:41, another tremor with a magnitude of 4.2 was recorded in the same region, 21 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.
Additionally, yesterday afternoon at 17:16, the Geodynamic Institute reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 in the same area, with an epicenter 21 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini and a focal depth of 14 kilometers.
Meanwhile, during midday on Sunday, February 9, a series of earthquakes hit the Cyclades Islands. At 13:54, a seismic tremor with a magnitude of 4.1 was recorded 19 kilometers south of Arkesini, Amorgos, at a focal depth of 12 kilometers. Just five minutes later, at 13:59, a stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 was recorded in the same area, with a focal depth of 15.4 kilometers.
Seismic activity continued into the early hours of the morning. The strongest earthquake of this period was recorded at 3:35 with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale, 26 kilometers northwest of Anafi. Additionally, a series of smaller tremors occurred between 4:30 and 5:00 in the morning on Sunday, with magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 3.8 on the Richter scale. These earthquakes were recorded in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos, reflecting the high seismic activity in this region.
Greek authorities and seismology experts are monitoring the situation and have emphasized that the Aegean region is one of the most seismically active areas in Europe. So far, there have been no reports of material damage or casualties, but residents of the affected areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow authorities’ instructions in case of further tremors.
According to seismologists, these earthquakes are part of the ongoing seismic activity that characterizes this region, but it remains important to assess whether stronger tremors could follow. Studies on the tectonic movements of the Aegean Sea indicate that these phenomena are common; however, the occurrence of a series of earthquakes within such a short period has raised concerns among residents and experts.
In the coming days, a more comprehensive assessment of the situation is expected from the Geodynamic Institute and the responsible emergency management authorities. Meanwhile, residents in the most affected areas are advised to follow safety guidelines and stay informed about any new developments regarding seismic activity in the region.
