Beekeeping in the Korçë County is increasingly turning into a tourist attraction, drawing foreign visitors, especially from Germany. Bee farms are now being included in tourist guides.

In Korçë County, there are over 200 bee farms, and the most sophisticated among them are being transformed into tourist destinations.

A group of German tourists recently visited one of these farms, while its administrator, Eugen Skërmo, says that tourist visits are steadily increasing.

“They came to Albania with a tour guide and decided to visit one or two farms. They are discussing bees, honey, and innovations in beekeeping. We have also invited the Korçë Beekeepers Association for a twinning with the Bavarian association,” he said.

Bavaria is known as one of the regions with a strong beekeeping tradition, and German tourists say they are impressed by what they have seen in Albania.

“We usually travel to different places to see how beekeeping is organized, the types of honey, and processing methods, all the way to quality preservation and market distribution. The association’s interest is to establish further cooperation with different colleagues.

We have seen how beekeeping develops in Albania, and we want to observe all processes at this farm as well. Each colleague is interested in gathering information and learning something new to develop their own operations in Germany,” said Franz Vollmajer, head of the Bavarian Beekeepers Association.

In recent years, bee farms beyond honey production have also seen a rise in tourist visits, becoming increasingly integrated into international travel itineraries.
