The Greek authorities have taken urgent measures and warned the residents of Santorini to avoid gatherings in closed spaces, stay away from old buildings, and remain calm during seismic tremors. These measures were taken after more than 200 seismic tremors were recorded in the last 48 hours, causing concern and panic among the citizens.
The seismic activity in Santorini and the surrounding areas has raised significant concerns. According to the volcanologist from the Hellenic Authority for Geological and Mining Research, Georgios Vougioukalakis, the area is undergoing a seismic crisis with over 200 tremors recorded in just two days. The epicenters of the quakes have mostly been located near Anhydros, an uninhabited island near Santorini, raising concerns about a potential risk.
To prevent panic and ensure the safety of citizens, safety measures have also been extended to neighboring islands like Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios. One of the important measures has been the evacuation of pools in Caldera, as the movement of water during strong earthquakes could damage structures and increase the risk of collapse.
The Santorini municipality has set up tents in open areas to provide shelter for citizens and tourists. The first images of preparations for a potential earthquake have been released by Greek media.
Seismic activity remains intense in the Cyclades region, and authorities are on high alert. Professor Efthimios Lekkas, an expert in Natural Disaster Management, has arrived on the island for an inspection of the area. Citizens are advised to avoid the coastline, not to stay in old buildings, and to follow the authorities’ instructions to prevent panic.
The Ministry of Civil Protection has announced that the seismic activity is not related to volcanic activity and is temporary, however, experts recommend precautionary measures, including the closure of schools on February 3. Citizens are also advised to avoid entering or staying in the small ports of Ammoudi and Fira, which primarily serve tourist ships.
