Over the past four years, Albania has received approximately $189 million in financial aid from USAID through non-governmental organizations (NGOs). However, in a recent development, a significant decision was made to suspend some of these NGOs that had benefited from the assistance.

The decision, made by Richard Grenell, the U.S. Special Envoy to the Balkans, has sparked debate and concern within political and civil society circles in Albania. According to sources, the decision was prompted by issues related to the transparency of funding and the use of USAID grants. Some NGOs have been accused of misusing funds, while others have raised concerns about the political influence these organizations may have had.

In this context, the Albanian government has expressed support for the decision, emphasizing the need for greater control and monitoring of foreign-funded projects. However, some activists and civil society organizations have expressed concern about the impact this decision may have on the development of social initiatives and the assistance they provide to Albania’s poor and vulnerable populations.

This development has raised important questions about the balance between international support and the need to ensure that these funds are used efficiently and fairly, taking into account the interests and needs of Albanian society.
