A heatwave affecting all of Europe is expected to bring temperatures of up to 40°C over the weekend, significantly increasing the risk to public health.

High temperatures, combined with dehydration, can cause heatstroke and worsen chronic illnesses, a risk that particularly affects the elderly, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

To address the situation, the Institute of Public Health (ISHP) and the Ministry of Health have issued a series of practical recommendations.

According to ISHP expert Rudina Cunashi, special attention should be given to infants: they should be kept away from direct sunlight, dressed in light clothing, and fed with extra care. Equally important is the proper storage and preparation of food at home, as high temperatures cause it to spoil more quickly and can lead to gastrointestinal problems.

People suffering from chronic diseases are advised to consult their doctors, as in hot conditions it may be necessary to adjust medication doses depending on their specific condition.

The same precautions apply to those spending their holidays at the seaside. Cunashi warns that entering the water immediately after prolonged sun exposure is dangerous and can trigger a heart attack.
