Albania is expected to be hit by a strong heatwave this week as a result of hot air masses of African origin that have affected almost the entire European continent.
Meteorologist Lajda Porja stated that although Albania lies on the periphery of this heatwave, the country will still experience very high temperatures, with June expected to end with values 7 to 8 degrees above the normal average for this period.
According to her, until Wednesday, maximum temperatures will fluctuate around 36°C, while in isolated areas they may reach 37°C. However, the second half of the week is expected to bring another significant rise in temperatures, with the thermometer potentially reaching 37°C or even 38°C on Friday and during the weekend.
During the first part of the week, the areas most exposed to the heat will mainly be the northeastern regions, while from Thursday onward, the greatest risk will shift to the southeastern part of the country. Central areas such as Tirana and Elbasan are also not excluded, where short-term rain showers may occur later in the day.
The meteorologist emphasized that high temperatures will continue not only throughout this week but also into the following week, making the days alternately hot and extremely hot. According to her, the regions expected to record the highest temperatures are Shkodër, Berat, Elbasan, and Gjirokastër.
Regarding the most critical hours, she explained that peak temperatures will occur between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., a time period during which citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary movement, stay in cool environments, and not neglect hydration.
For the region, the situation appears similar. Kosovo and North Macedonia are facing temperatures ranging from 31°C to 34°C, while the peak of the heat is expected over the weekend. In Kosovo, mostly stable weather is forecast, with isolated showers, while in North Macedonia mornings will be very hot and sunny, with afternoons expected to bring rain showers, windstorms, and occasional hail.
According to forecasts, Saturday will be the hottest day for countries in the region, while high temperatures are expected to continue throughout next week.
