More “tough guys” in families, mistreatment of family members among the 3 most frequent criminal offenses in our country

According to data from INSTAT, a three-year period highlights the growing phenomenon of domestic violence in Albanian families.

At the top of the list of criminal offenses analyzed in 2024, violations of traffic rules account for the largest share, at 16.5% of all offenses, followed by drug-related offenses at 8.9%, while domestic violence ranks third at 6.6%.

In 2024, 265 more men “showed their muscles” to women, with a total of 2,139 cases, compared with the previous year.

Over these three years, men accounted for around 94–95% of convicted individuals each year and were involved in almost all categories of criminal offenses.

Meanwhile, females account for approximately only 5% of convicted offenders and are mainly involved in criminal offenses such as domestic violence, fraud and abuse of office, illegal construction, and exploitation of prostitution.

If in 2023 the difference in domestic violence cases compared with 2022 was 24, in 2024 the difference from the previous year was even higher, with 228 more cases. Punishment has also increased, with the number of people ending up behind bars also rising.

What these statistics also highlight is the involvement of minors in several criminal offenses in 2024. Of a total of 1,447 cases, 7.8% involved domestic violence. Although these cases have decreased from year to year, the involvement of minors remains high compared with all criminal offenses recorded within a single year, with girls making up the clear majority.
