Murder of “Eagles” officer Enea Mekolli in Maliq, Prosecutor’s Office investigates Korçë police command structure

The Prosecutor’s Office, in cooperation with the Police Oversight Agency, is investigating the command structure of the Korçë Police following the killing of Enea Mekolli, an officer of the “Eagles” special unit, and the wounding of his colleague Edison Adri during an operation to arrest wanted fugitive Violand Bracellari.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, investigators are examining whether an operational plan had been prepared to apprehend the wanted man and whether all safety elements had been carefully assessed before the officers were sent into the operation.

As part of the investigation, a series of forensic examinations are being conducted, including checks of the weapons the officers were equipped with, the bulletproof vests they were wearing, and a detailed analysis of the way the intervention was carried out.

Police have officially stated that 10 officers took part in the operation and that there was an operational plan for the intervention.

Enea Mekolli was shot dead by Violand Bracellari as the officers approached his shelter on Mount Bodesë, in Maliq, to arrest him.

Edison Adri was also wounded. Bracellari had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking and was wanted by authorities. He was considered highly dangerous and had been living in hiding in a remote mountainous area, where he had also built a livestock shelter with funding from AZHBR, which is also being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office.

There are suspicions that he had links with certain police elements that helped him remain at large, but so far, the investigation has not produced any results in this direction.
