For the first time, scientists in China have reprogrammed a woman’s fat cells, turning them into pancreatic cells that produce insulin — a breakthrough that has transformed her type 1 diabetes. This development adds new and promising evidence that reprogrammed stem cells could one day be used to treat or even cure this chronic disease.
The patient involved in this latest study no longer needed insulin injections one year after the procedure.
“These findings are incredibly exciting,” said Dr. Kevan Herold, a professor of immunobiology and medicine at Yale School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study. Insulin is the chemical key that allows sugar molecules to move from the bloodstream into cells, where they serve as an energy source.
