President Mulino responds to Trump’s threats: The Panama Canal is not a gift from the USA

Panama has responded to threats from U.S. President Donald Trump about “taking back” the Panama Canal, a key trade route.

“The Panama Canal was not a concession or a gift from the United States,” said Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino during a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In his inaugural speech, Trump claimed that Panama had “broken” a promise to remain neutral, alleging that “China is operating the Panama Canal.” Trump also stated that “American ships are being heavily charged and unfairly treated.”

The canal is one of the most important trade routes for the United States, with approximately 5% of global maritime trade passing through the 82 km Panama Canal.

Mulino said that Trump’s claims about the canal are “false,” adding that it belongs to the people of Panama.
