Authorities in Santorini declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to intense and ongoing seismic activity affecting the island and surrounding areas, including Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios. Residents and tourists are leaving in large numbers, while the state of emergency will remain in effect until March 1, according to civil protection authorities.

The earthquakes have caused significant concern, increasing the risk of landslides and rockfalls. On Wednesday night alone, the region experienced six tremors with a magnitude of 4, followed by a stronger quake of 5.2 south of Amorgos.

The mayor of Anafi, Iakovos Poussos, stated that the continuous tremors have led to exhaustion and anxiety among residents, who have struggled to sleep through the night. He also pointed out that the suspension of ferry services due to strong winds has heightened the sense of insecurity, as the island lacks an airport.

Meanwhile, the deputy mayor of Amorgos, Stamatis Simos, emphasized that due to the island’s proximity to the epicenter, the tremors are felt more intensely and are accompanied by a noticeable rumbling sound, making the situation even more distressing for residents.
