Schools on the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Ios, and Anafi will remain closed until February 28 due to the recent earthquakes that have affected the region. This decision follows a meeting held by two key scientific committees that evaluated the seismic and volcanic situation in this part of Greece. The Permanent Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and Reduction and the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc gathered to assess the ongoing seismic activity in the Santorini caldera and its potential impact on surrounding areas.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, along with other state officials and representatives from the Fire Brigade. The seismic activity within the caldera remains at stable levels, while a decrease in ground deformation has been observed in the broader Santorini area. Although these seismic activities are being carefully monitored, public buildings have been evaluated as stable under seismic loads based on inspections carried out so far.
To prevent risks, the committees have provided several recommendations for citizens and authorities. They emphasize the need to avoid large gatherings inside buildings and staying near abandoned structures, which could pose a danger to people’s lives. Additionally, citizens are advised to avoid entering or staying in the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfou, and the Old Port of Fira, as these areas are more vulnerable to seismic shocks. Another recommendation is that hazardous items in private buildings, such as heavy hanging objects and false ceilings, should be removed to prevent accidents.
In the event of strong seismic tremors, citizens should immediately evacuate coastal areas, which may be at risk of potential tsunami waves. They should also choose safe routes when moving through urban areas and regional road networks, especially in areas with steep slopes where landslides are likely to occur. These precautionary measures are crucial to ensure the protection of life and property during this period of seismic uncertainty.
Regarding the reopening of schools, authorities have warned that the possibility of reopening on February 28 will be reconsidered based on further seismic and volcanic developments. A joint meeting will be held to evaluate whether it is safe for students and teachers to return to school.
