Scientists: Discover the age at which your brain begins to age

Aging is not an easy process; it requires acceptance, preparation, and adaptation.


According to a new study published in *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences* (PNAS), scientists have pinpointed the age at which our brain begins to decline more rapidly. Since age-related cognitive decline follows a specific progression, understanding this process can help you exert some influence over it.


“Understanding the key factors that drive brain aging is essential for the effective prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases,” the study states.


Brain aging typically begins in middle age, around 40 years old.


Previous research has shown that brain networks undergo significant changes starting in the late 40s, which can lead to effects that destabilize and disrupt brain functions.


As a result, our lifestyle choices during middle age between 40 and 60 years old are extremely important.

Also, if your lifestyle habits are not ideal, the ages of 40–60 are critical for intervention.


Moreover, the period of metabolic stress that is, a disrupted balance of homeostasis typically lasts from age 40 to 59, making this a key window for midlife interventions if needed.


Using four datasets from the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, researchers identified three major transition points in brain aging:


43.7 years, when metabolic destabilization begins;

66.7 years, when the fastest destabilization occurs;

89.7 years, when destabilization reaches its peak.


Insulin resistance can also play an important role in how these transition points develop and in the increase of destabilization. If you have insulin-related issues, it’s advisable to monitor and manage them as you age.


Ultimately, metabolic stress is the main driver of age-related cognitive decline.


It can be caused by many lifestyle factors; lack of nutrients, insufficient physical activity, and chronic stress are just a few of the key contributors that determine how metabolic stress will manifest.


As we age (and even now!), it’s important to be mindful of what we eat, how we treat our bodies, and how we manage stress in our lives.


Because, while aging is an inevitable part of life, healthy lifestyle choices can make the process much more manageable.
