As technology evolves, we continue to discard more and more electronic devices, considering them useless and creating polluting waste.

However, a team of Swiss scientists (ETH Zurich) has raised the alarm for almost every household with their findings related to one particular device.

The scientists have discovered an object that could be a gold mine, thanks to a method that allows the extraction of precious metals from electronic waste.

This is a sustainable alternative based on a method already used in the food industry and does not harm the environment.

According to information published in the journal Advanced Materials, the team of scientists obtained a 450-milligram piece of 22-karat gold using 20 old computer circuit boards.

In most households, when a desktop computer is replaced by a laptop, the tower unit is thrown away — but gold can be recovered using the scientists' method.

By processing the parts under acidic conditions and high temperatures, they produced a suspension of protein nanofibers.

This resulted in a gel, and eventually, a sponge was formed from it.
