A complaint has arrived at the editorial office of the investigative TV show Fiks Fare from several students of the “Rifat Manjani” high school in Durrës, who accuse their English teacher of showing up to class drunk.
According to the students, the teacher smelled of alcohol, bullied them, and pressured them by threatening to fail them in the subject. They also stated that his classes were conducted unseriously and were accompanied by inappropriate behavior.
The editorial office also received a video recorded by the students themselves, in which the teacher is seen consuming raki and beer before the start of the school day. To verify the report, the Fiks Fare team positioned itself at the café near the school, where, according to the students, he stops every morning.
At around 08:20 in the morning, the show's cameras recorded the teacher arriving at the café together with his wife and daughter. The waiter served him a glass of raki, but the teacher refused it as soon as he noticed the presence of the Fiks Fare staff.
When asked by journalists why he refused the drink, he arrogantly replied: “I don’t need your permission for anything.” After the journalists showed him the recorded video where he was seen consuming alcohol before class, the teacher tried to justify himself, saying: “I am human and sometimes I might have a drink, but not during work hours. That video was filmed on a Sunday.”
However, during filming, Fiks Fare journalists also captured other violations by the teacher. He was seen smoking inside the school premises and even communicating with students with a cigarette in his hand an act that violates the regulations of educational institutions. When asked about this, teacher Shkëlzen Suma claimed he had not broken any rules and that smoking is allowed in outdoor areas of the school.
Although the students refused to speak publicly for fear of punishment, one of them stated in a phone call that the teacher blackmails and mocks them, adding that his teaching performance is very poor.
Fiks Fare also contacted the principal of the “Rifat Manjani” high school, Mr. Arjan Kaja. The principal initially stated that it was not his concern what the teacher does. When asked whether he considered the teacher's alcohol consumption before class problematic, the principal condemned the act but claimed he was not aware of such a situation.
Fiks Fare then contacted the Regional Directorate of Pre-University Education in Durrës, which reacted immediately by setting up a working group to verify the complaints of students and parents. Following this administrative investigation, serious violations of work ethics by teacher Suma were confirmed. Based on the Law on Pre-University Education and the Teacher Ethics Code, disciplinary action was taken against Shkëlzen Suma: Dismissal from his job.
