Strong tensions and clashes between protesters and police forces were reported this Thursday outside the Parliament building, shortly before the start of the plenary session.
The protest organized in front of Parliament escalated with the arrival of MPs, when a group of protesters threw eggs toward them. Immediately after the incident, police forces intervened to restore order, detaining six protesters.
During the clashes, three State Police officers were injured, while tensions in the area remained high.
After the initial intervention, protesters moved toward the pedestrian area, where they attempted to break through the security cordon set up by police. To stop the crowd’s advance, law enforcement used tear gas.
The clashes lasted for several minutes, while police managed to keep the security perimeter around the Parliament building under control.
At the entrance of Parliament, two water cannon vehicles were also placed on standby as a precautionary measure, although they have not been used at this stage.
Following reports that three officers had been injured, the Minister of Interior, Besford Lamallari, left the premises of the Parliamentary Presidency to closely monitor the condition of the injured police officers.
Meanwhile, the situation around the Parliament area continues to be monitored by law enforcement forces, while the protest is taking place in parallel with the plenary session.
