Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that occurs when the heart stops beating, thereby halting the supply of oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. This poses a life-threatening risk to the individual. A dangerous cardiac arrest is often a sudden event that requires immediate action to save the person’s life.
What is Cardiac Arrest?
Cardiac arrest is a condition where the heart stops beating or has an irregular rhythm that prevents it from pumping blood to the body. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including heart disease, electric shock, severe trauma, or substance abuse. Common symptoms include loss of consciousness, absence of pulse, and no breathing.
Necessary Actions for Treating Cardiac Arrest
1. Call for Medical Help Immediately (112). The first thing you should do is call emergency services. The quicker professional medical help arrives, the higher the chances of saving the individual’s life.
2. Start Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). If the person has lost consciousness and is not breathing, it’s crucial to start CPR immediately. This involves performing strong and fast chest compressions to keep blood circulating, giving the heart time to recover.
3. Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). If you have access to an AED, it should be used as soon as possible. This device can restore the normal rhythm of the heart by delivering a controlled shock of electricity to help restart the heart.
4. Monitor the Person and Provide Support Until Medical Help Arrives. It is important to monitor any changes in the person’s condition and provide emotional support, especially until medical professionals arrive.
Prevention and Risk Factors
While it is not always possible to prevent cardiac arrest, some risk factors can be managed to reduce the likelihood of such an event:
Maintaining a healthy weight
Regular physical exercise
Managing stress and avoiding smoking and alcohol
Monitoring heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes
Regular consultations with a doctor for health concerns
