“They give them a bath in the middle of the room” / The Xhemollari family’s drama in Podgorie, Maliq, living amid poverty and fear that their house may collapse

In a dilapidated house in the village of Podgorie, Maliq, the Xhemollari family lives every day amid poverty, pain, and fear. Cracked walls, a ceiling that is falling day by day, and the lack of basic living conditions have become the harsh reality of this family.

Everything became even more difficult two years ago, when the head of the family was left paralyzed after a serious illness. Since then, the family has been fighting every day for survival, while financial hardship has made their life even more difficult.

Through tears, the woman of the house, Anxhela, says that they are forced to wash her paralyzed husband in the middle of the room, as the house has no functional bathroom. They heat water in primitive ways, while every day they live with the fear that the ceiling might collapse on their heads.

“Just a bathroom and a house that won’t trap us inside,” is the family’s simple appeal, asking only for a little dignity to live.

Neighbors have also tried to help them as much as they can. Ermanti, one of them, says that from time to time they have provided basic food supplies, but the family’s situation remains very difficult.

The Xhemollari family needs the help of anyone who can contribute, even minimally, to repair the house and to build a functional bathroom for the paralyzed head of the family. / By Shkëlzen Henkoja
