Tragic accident with two children killed, Police Director suspended

After the very serious accident that occurred a day earlier in the city of Durrës, where two minors lost their lives and another was injured, the State Police has taken immediate administrative measures against several local officials.

The Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, in implementation of the State Police Regulation, has decided to suspend from duty, until the conclusion of investigations, for poor performance in the fulfillment of duties, the following:

– Director of the Durrës Local Police Directorate, Afrim Tafa;

– Deputy Director for Public Order and Security of the Durrës Police Directorate, Zija Sulaj;

– Head of the Traffic Police Sector of the Durrës Police Directorate, Kreshnik Skëndo.

Immediately after the incident, the Director General ordered the establishment of a group of experts from the Traffic Police Directorate, who went to the scene to analyze in detail the causes and circumstances of the accident.

In parallel, the Professional Standards Directorate of the State Police has launched a disciplinary investigation to assess possible responsibilities of police officers in relation to this case.

The tragic accident, which occurred on May 3, where a vehicle left the road and hit three children, has caused widespread public reaction and has put the issue of road safety and institutional responsibility in focus. Investigations into the full clarification of the case are ongoing.
