Watch out, drivers! Parliament approves new rules and tougher penalties

The Parliment of Albania has approved, with 84 votes, a new package of amendments to the Road Code, a reform aimed at increasing road safety and imposing stricter penalties on drivers who violate traffic rules.

The changes, proposed by Erion Braçe and Ulsi Manja, introduce new measures for young drivers, tougher penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol, and harsher sanctions for using mobile phones while driving.

One of the key changes in the law is the permanent revocation of driving licenses for repeat offenders caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Under the approved amendments, if a driver is found with more than 0.5 grams of alcohol per liter of blood and has already been penalized for the same violation, a repeated offense will result in the permanent loss of their driving license.

The law also introduces a probation period for new drivers during the first two years after obtaining their license.

For this category, the following rules apply:

Zero tolerance for alcohol

Speed limit of up to 90 km/h on highways

Speed limit of up to 80 km/h outside urban areas

Driving prohibited from 12:00 AM to 6:00 AM without a companion who has held a driving license for at least three years

According to the authors of the reform package, these measures aim to reduce road accidents and increase awareness about respecting traffic regulations.
