Women are more prone to excessive alcohol consumption when they have higher levels of estrogen, according to a study by scientists from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.

The study found that women's relationship with binge drinking is linked to their estrogen levels. This is why, during periods of high hormone levels, they tend to consume large amounts of alcohol in the first half-hour after starting to drink.

The researchers, whose findings were published in the journal Nature Communications, discovered that estrogen contributes to the different approaches men and women have toward excessive alcohol use, Independent reports.

They monitored hormone levels during the menstrual cycles of female mice before administering alcohol, discovering that the female mice drank significantly more when their estrogen levels were high.

“Estrogen has such powerful effects on many behaviors, especially in females. So it makes sense that it would influence alcohol consumption as well,” said scientist Kristen Playle.
