U.S. President Joe Biden has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a ceasefire deal to end the fighting.

“I have good news from the Middle East. I spoke with the prime ministers of Israel and Lebanon, and their governments have accepted the U.S.-proposed agreement to end the conflict. I want to thank French President Emmanuel Macron for helping facilitate this deal,” said President Biden.

He also stated that the ceasefire would take effect at 4:00 AM local time on Wednesday, putting an end to cross-border hostilities. Biden emphasized that Hezbollah would not be allowed to regroup. “Let me be clear: Israel did not start this war, nor did the Lebanese people, nor the United States. Since the outbreak of this war, over 70,000 Israelis have been forced to live as refugees. This has been the deadliest conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in decades,” Biden noted.

President Joe Biden stated that efforts will continue to secure a ceasefire in Gaza as well. He emphasized that Hamas has only one option, while reaffirming the U.S. commitment to pursuing peace in the region.

Biden expressed that the U.S. is prepared to broker “historic agreements,” including the establishment of a Palestinian state and the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. He highlighted that the decision by Israeli and Lebanese leaders to accept the U.S.-proposed ceasefire demonstrates that “peace is possible.”

“The people of Gaza deserve an end to the fighting and displacement. They have endured unimaginable suffering and hardship. The only viable path forward is for Hamas to release hostages taken in Israel last year and end the violence, which would allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. I firmly believe this agenda is achievable,” Biden stated.
