The Academy of Sciences commemorated the distinguished mathematician, Academician Petraq Pilika, on the anniversary of his birth.
Petraq Pilika was born on June 3, 1924. He is considered one of the most important figures in Albanian mathematics and higher education, as well as one of the most prominent personalities of Albanian science.
He graduated from the French National Lyceum of Korçë and, from a young age, became involved in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation Movement and War.
He completed his higher studies in mathematics at Moscow State University's “Lomonosov” University (1946–1951). After returning to Albania in 1951, he was appointed head of the Department of Mathematics and Physics at the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Tirana. Following the establishment of the University of Tirana, he became head of the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, a position he held for 31 years.
Academician Pilika played a key role in the development of mathematical research in Albania, guiding it toward promising fields and directly influencing the advancement of teaching standards and scientific applications. His most significant contributions were in the theory of functions, with research papers published both in Albania and abroad.
During the 1970s, he was among the leading figures in shaping the strategy for the development of mathematics in Albania. He was also the principal organizer of two national mathematics conferences (1984 and 1989) and represented the country at major international forums, including the International Congresses of Mathematicians in Nice (1970) and Helsinki (1978).
In recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions, the Academy of Sciences of Albania established the “Petraq Pilika” Award. He passed away on April 7, 2009, leaving a profound legacy in Albanian education and science.
