Socialists in Maliq are opposing the government’s proposal to dissolve their municipality and merge it with Korçë. The Maliq Municipal Council has begun consultations with residents of the administrative units, who unanimously oppose the new territorial map proposed by the Socialist Party.
Maliq Socialist Party chairman Ornid Demollari has also publicly spoken out against his own party’s draft, arguing that the proposed merger would move public services farther away from residents.
Demollari made the statement following meetings held in the Libonik administrative unit, where residents strongly opposed the merger of Maliq with Korçë. They also accused the government of making decisions without consulting the citizens who would be affected by the proposed changes.
Consultations will continue in the other administrative units of Maliq, while the Municipal Council is expected to approve its position at a special meeting on August 20. The document will then be submitted to Parliament, while discussions on the territorial reform are expected to resume in October.
