The 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered a major surprise in Group C, as Morocco held Brazil to a historic 1-1 draw at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
In sweltering conditions with temperatures exceeding 36°C, Carlo Ancelotti’s Seleção struggled badly without their star player Neymar against a fearless Moroccan side that took to the field with as many as six debutants.
The Africans started the match at a relentless and aggressive pace, taking the lead in the 21st minute through Ismael Saibari, who beat Alisson after a brilliant defense-splitting pass from Brahim Díaz.
Brazil responded quickly and equalized in the 32nd minute thanks to a stunning strike from Vinícius Júnior, who found the far corner beyond Bounou following a solo run down the left flank. The second half was expected to bring a Brazilian comeback, but instead turned into a tough physical and tactical battle with few clear chances.
The extreme heat drained the players’ energy and significantly slowed the tempo of the game. Despite Ancelotti’s substitutions and late pressure, Brazil lacked creativity, while Morocco’s defense remained unbreakable, securing a precious point and leaving the five-time world champions facing criticism.
