Medications used to relieve anxiety symptoms or severe emotional states are being misused by citizens. Psychiatrist Irena Thoma, during an interview on the program “Health O’clock,” stated that they are often taken without a doctor’s recommendation, influenced instead by advice from friends or family members.

“Since these are medications that provide very quick relief, they feel pleasant. I think this is the trap of these drugs they create the impression that they are the only thing that can free you and calm you from distress, anxiety, or symptoms of severe emotional states. This leads to their use even based on a family member’s recommendation,” said Dr. Irena Thoma, psychiatrist at the Psychiatric Hospital, UHCT

However, what many do not know is that these medications can become dangerous.

“Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Loram, Clonotril… Dependency means that at a certain point a medication no longer produces the desired effect, and the person is forced to increase the dose. As the dose increases, the effect diminishes, leading to even higher doses, up to toxic and harmful levels. In such cases, the only solution is treatment with a toxicologist to break the dependence,” Thoma added.

To treat mental health issues, the doctor recommends always consulting a psychiatrist and never taking medications without a prescription. Although in recent years the stigma around these problems has eased, medical professionals note that patients often do not accept the problem and seek help late.
