Let’s remember those we once had…!
The player you see in the photo is Ali Sowe. Every Skënderbeu fan remembers the 2017-2018 season when he “exploded” with goals while wearing the red-and-white jersey in Albania and was crowned the top scorer of the Superliga.
The confirmation of the club’s sanction led him, like many others, to bid farewell to Korça.
This season, now at the age of 30, Sowe is playing in the Turkish Super League with Rizespor, where he wears the number 9 jersey.
Today, the Gambian striker scored against Galatasaray, bringing his tally to 11 goals this season in the Turkish Super League. Just two weeks ago, he also scored twice against Fenerbahçe.
A total of 11 goals scored from open play, none from penalties.
11 goals in a league where strikers like Osimhen, Džeko, Immobile, Morata, Piątek, En-Nesyri, and others compete.
He plays in the same league as Rey Manaj, who has scored only 7 goals this season—some from penalties—yet the media constantly glorifies him week after week, and he is currently considered Albania’s starting striker.
Ali Sowe is just an example of the level Skënderbeu once had and the kind of players that were part of the team.
Today, Skënderbeu’s management, blinded by money, has sold yet another rising star, Mario Rabiu, while the team stands on the brink of relegation to the First Division.
It seems that the rush to make quick money has backfired on the long-term plan, as next season, in the First Division, player sales will be minimal and for laughable sums.
If Skënderbeu had stayed in the Superliga, summer would have come again, players would have been sold again, and the club would have generated the same revenues next season.
Nevertheless, all we can do now is hope and wish for a quick return to the high levels we once reached, and to see the red-and-whites crowned champions once again…
