Australia is currently grappling with an extreme heatwave, with temperatures in some areas expected to soar above 40 degrees Celsius.

According to forecasts, parts of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and the Northern Territory could see temperatures as high as 45–46 degrees Celsius on Monday, as reported by local broadcaster SBS News.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued warnings of a “high likelihood” for fire alerts and severe heatwave conditions across the country in the coming days, as the heat impacts a vast stretch from northern to southeastern Australia.

In many regions, the heatwave is expected to persist into the following week. Extreme temperatures are forecasted to continue in parts of Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory until the end of next week.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), heat stress is deadlier than any other natural hazard. In Europe alone, high temperatures were linked to approximately 47,000 deaths in 2023. The EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reports that heat-related mortality has increased by around 30% over the past two decades.
