Some towns in eastern Australia have been blanketed by the heaviest snowfall in decades, as extreme weather struck the region over the weekend, causing floods, stranded vehicles, and power outages in thousands of homes, authorities said.
The weather is improving today, with forecasters predicting up to 50 cm of snow in some areas and more than 10 cm of rain expected in others, according to the New South Wales Emergency Management Agency.
Areas in the northwestern parts of New England recorded the heaviest snowfall in 20 years, foreign media reported, while the neighboring state of Queensland experienced its first snowfall in a decade.
