The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated that the opposition still does not have an official candidate for the upcoming early elections for the Municipality of Tirana.
Berisha clarified that three representatives Belind Këlliçi, Flamur Noka, and Ilir Alimehmeti have been tasked with negotiating with other opposition parties regarding potential candidates.
In a statement to the media, the Democratic Party chief said that he himself would not express any opinion on a possible candidate, as this could influence the selection process. According to him, everything is part of a procedure that requires broad agreement among opposition forces.
“Belind Këlliçi, Flamur Noka, and Ilir Alimehmeti will be our representatives for negotiations with other opposition parties. Does it make sense for me, on one hand, to task them with negotiations and on the other hand to declare preferred names? They will meet today, although they started their work yesterday. These three are tasked with negotiating with all opposition parties, meeting with representatives and candidates, and reaching an agreement on names. Then will come the decision-making phase for the candidate. I will not comment, because this is a process. If I do, it would mean I have a preferred candidate,” Berisha said.
The early elections for the Municipality of Tirana have become a central point of discussion within the opposition camp, while negotiations for a joint candidate continue.
