The incoming administration of President Donald Trump is planning a major operation against immigration in Chicago, on his second day in office, according to the daily newspaper The Wall Street Journal, which cited four people familiar with the plan.

The operation, which is expected to begin on Tuesday, will last throughout the week, according to the newspaper, which added that the agency responsible for immigration and customs enforcement will send between 100 and 200 officers for this purpose.

The transition team did not respond to a request for comment from the news agency Reuters.

Mr. Trump’s appointee for border issues, Tom Homan, said during an event in the city that the administration would “start right here in Chicago, Illinois,” according to the report.

“And if the mayor of Chicago doesn’t want to help, he can stay aside. But if he obstructs us, if he knowingly protects or hides an illegal immigrant, we will pursue him criminally,” he was quoted as saying.

The issue of immigration was at the center of Mr. Trump’s campaign for the presidential elections on November 5.

“A few minutes after my inauguration, we will begin the largest deportation operation in American history,” Mr. Trump declared in January 2024.

President Trump is expected to mobilize agencies across the United States to assist in the deportation of a record number of immigrants, continuing efforts he made during his first term, to deploy all available resources and to pressure so-called “sanctuary states” to cooperate.
