Sarah Dzafce, a girl of Kosova origin who was crowned “Miss Finland 2025” in September, will be stripped of her crown after a photo surfaced showing her making a gesture perceived as racist.
The photo shows Dzafce pulling her eyes sideways with her fingers, with Finnish text underneath: “kiinalaisenkaa syömäs,” roughly translating to “eating with a Chinese person.”
The image was widely interpreted as mocking Asian people. Initially, Dzafce defended the gesture, claiming she pulled her eyes that way due to a “severe headache.”
However, the Miss Finland organization, which runs the annual pageant, stated on Wednesday that it does not tolerate racism or discriminatory behavior in any form.
On Thursday, the organization issued a “sincere apology” for the incident and announced that Dzafce would be relieved of her title.
As a result, Tara Lehtonen, who finished second after Dzafce, will take over the crown.
Dzafce, born in Oulu and raised in Kuopio, is of Kosova descent.
“I am deeply sorry to everyone I have offended and hurt with my actions on social media,” she said during a Thursday press conference.
