Farewell to the great Koço Qendro, the icon of Albanian theatre and cinematography

The actor Koço Qendro has passed away, one of the most important names in Albanian theatre, comedy, and cinematography, leaving behind an extraordinary artistic contribution built over more than six decades.
Born on May 15, 1927 in Senicë, Delvinë, Koço Qendro built his life and artistic career in Korçë, where he became one of the founders and most representative figures of professional theatre and variety shows. With hundreds of roles performed in theatre and film, he became one of the most beloved actors among the Albanian public.
One of the most outstanding performances of his career remains that of Harpagon in Molière’s comedy “The Miser”. Qendro brought this character to the stage at different stages of his life, returning to portray it even in old age, as proof of his unwavering dedication and passion for art.
In cinematography as well, he left a significant mark with roles in films such as “The Eighth in Bronze”, “The Struggle”, “Dawn of the Great Season”, “The Decision”, as well as in a number of other productions that are today considered part of the golden fund of Albanian cinema.
Beyond the stage and screen, Koço Qendro made an important contribution to preserving the history of Korçë theatre, documenting events, memories, and figures that have left a mark on the tradition of Albanian stage art. For his artistic activity, he was honored with numerous titles and awards, and recently received the title “Ambassador of the Region” from the Korçë Regional Council, as a sign of appreciation for his contribution to Albanian culture.
With the passing of Koço Qendro, Albania loses not only a great actor, but also one of the most important witnesses of the history of Albanian theatre and humor. The characters he brought to stage and screen will remain part of public memory, while his name will continue to hold a special place in the history of Albanian art.
