Complaints filed by Ilir Meta and Erion Veliaj through commissioners of the Ombudsman regarding detention conditions and treatment by authorities have been made public.

According to sources within the Ombudsman’s office shared with Top Channel, Tirana’s mayor, Erion Veliaj, has complained about discriminatory treatment during his transfer to the hospital. Veliaj stated that the heavy police presence was disproportionate and inconsistent with the treatment given to other detainees.

Regarding his cell conditions, Veliaj expressed dissatisfaction with how he has been treated, raising concerns about respect for his rights during detention.

On the other hand, former president Ilir Meta has claimed that he is being penalized compared to other inmates, particularly concerning outdoor time and physical exercise.

He reported increased security measures every time he goes out for fresh air, noting that this process does not take place under the same conditions as for other prisoners. Meta also denounced restrictions on his ability to perform sports activities and expressed feelings of isolation.

Official sources told the reporter that after the complaints were reviewed by two anti-torture commissioners, official information is expected to be requested from the relevant institutions.

Specifically, they will verify the security measures in place on the day Veliaj was escorted to the hospital, as well as the protocols followed for Ilir Meta’s detention in Prison 313, where he is currently held.
