Heart Attack – A Growing Phenomenon That No Longer Respects Age

In the past, heart attacks were mostly associated with older age, but today we are seeing a worrying trend: more and more young people are facing heart attacks, some even fatal. What is happening?

What is a heart attack?

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked, usually by a blood clot in the coronary arteries. Without oxygen and nutrients, the heart tissue begins to die within minutes.

The most common causes:

  • High emotional and physical stress

  • Unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, processed food, lack of physical activity)

  • High cholesterol and blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Consumption of harmful substances (such as drugs or large amounts of energy drinks)

  • Inherited conditions or hidden heart problems

Why is it happening to young people too?

The main factors are:

  • Increasing levels of chronic stress starting in adolescence

  • Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity

  • Excessive consumption of fast food and energy drinks

  • Use of nicotine, alcohol, and other substances often in an unorganized and uncontrolled manner

  • Irregular sleep and continuous use of technology

Warning signs that should not be ignored:

  • Chest pain or pressure (often described as tightness or burning)

  • Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, jaw, or back

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Cold sweat

  • Nausea, dizziness, unexplained fatigue

  • Sudden loss of consciousness

What can we do?

  • Educate ourselves and others about the warning signs

  • Get regular heart check-ups, especially if there is a family history

  • Avoid harmful habits and follow an active and balanced lifestyle

  • Never ignore any signals from the body, even if we are young

The heart knows no age. Take care of it every day.
