Bosnia and Herzegovina’s historic qualification for the World Cup against Italy has brought to light a decisive episode during the penalty shootout.
The protagonist is Afan Cizmic, a 14-year-old member of the youth teams of NK Celik, who was working as a ball boy during the play-off match. The youngster told local media that he stole Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s note containing instructions on Bosnian penalty takers, which the keeper had placed near his towel.
According to Cizmic’s account, he took the note and immediately hid it, forcing the Italian goalkeeper to act without technical guidance during the penalty shootout.
This action caused irritation for Donnarumma, who unsuccessfully searched for the note before the kicks began.
The note has now become a symbol for local fans and will be auctioned for charity, while on social media there are calls for the 14-year-old to be included in the Bosnian delegation at the World Cup in the United States as the team’s mascot.
