Local elections 2027 / The two dates being discussed and the new map with 46 municipalities

The Socialist Party continues to support the new territorial reform, despite opposition emerging in several parts of the country. The proposed draft envisages reducing the number of municipalities from 61 to 46, as well as reorganizing administrative units.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has called on the Socialist Party’s political leaders to step up communication with citizens regarding the reform. According to him, merging several municipalities does not mean eliminating cities or administrative units.

However, the reform has also faced opposition within the Socialist ranks. In some cases, mayors and local officials have expressed reservations about the proposed changes.

One such case is the Municipality of Dimal, which according to the draft is expected to merge with the Municipality of Berat. The changes will also affect the current mayors of municipalities slated for merger, as they will not be able to run for leadership of these new units in the 2027 elections.

The Two Election Dates

The approval of the territorial reform must be completed before the President of the Republic officially sets the date for the local elections.

According to statements made by representatives of the Socialist Party, the 2027 local elections are expected to take place in May. The two dates currently being discussed are May 2 and May 9, 2027.

The completion of the territorial reform and the official determination of the election date are expected to clarify the new administrative map and the race for leadership of the municipalities in the upcoming local elections.
