Meta and Kryemadhi at the Special Court / Cakrani attacks SSACOC: Charges without evidence, CEZ/DIA case file unfounded

A hearing on the merits is being held today at the Special Court against Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi, as part of the case related to the CEZ/DIA affair and lobbying in the United States.

The hearing was marked by tensions from the very beginning. According to reports, Kryemadhi’s lawyer was initially not allowed to enter the courtroom after refusing a bag inspection by security personnel.

Meanwhile, Meta’s lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, strongly challenged the charges brought by SSACOC, stating that they are not supported by concrete evidence and that the CEZ/DIA case has no legal basis.

According to Cakrani, the investigation into this case began in 2017 following a complaint filed by Romeo Karaj, immediately after the conclusion of the court proceedings against Kastriot Ismailaj and the closure of arbitration proceedings.

The lawyer claimed that the initial complaint targeted former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his government, but later the focus shifted to Meta.

Cakrani argued that the CEZ/DIA case has been used as a political instrument to target Meta, emphasizing that DIA was an American company with international operations and had no need for political intervention to function.

He also dismissed claims related to Meta’s travels and contacts with individuals involved in the case, stating that charges cannot be based on elements which, according to him, are not proven by official documents.

Another key point of the defense was the lack of financial analysis in the case file. According to the lawyer, SPAK has not presented a complete financial analysis of Meta’s assets, which he said weakens the corruption and money laundering charges.

Cakrani also challenged the use of statements made by former minister Dritan Prifti, arguing that they were given during a period when Prifti was in open conflict with Meta and therefore cannot be considered reliable evidence.

According to him, testimony or documents obtained during arbitration in Vienna cannot be used in this trial either, as arbitration procedures are protected by confidentiality and their use without authorization constitutes a legal violation.

It is recalled that Meta is accused of three criminal offenses, communicated on August 4, 2025: concealment of assets, money laundering, and corruption.

Ilir Meta has been in pre-trial detention since October 2024, while Monika Kryemadhi is under a measure requiring regular court appearances.

The “Meta” case file also includes investigations involving Kryemadhi’s mother, Pirro Xhixho, and Ema Çoku, who are accused of several criminal offenses, including passive corruption, money laundering, and failure to declare assets.
