The Deputy Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Eugena Tomini, has clarified details about the new guideline on hormone therapy, emphasizing that it is a clinical guidance document and not a final therapeutic protocol.
She underlined that the purpose of the document is to guide healthcare professionals in the process of recommending hormone therapy for individuals referred for this service.
According to her, the guideline does not provide for the initiation of hormone treatment in childhood.
“This guideline has been prepared based on international practices and recommendations, as well as the assessment of a multidisciplinary team of specialists,” said Eugena Tomini.
The Deputy Minister also clarified that the document applies only to adults and is in line with current legislation, being based on individual informed consent.
She added that the document contains only general recommendations and different types of hormone therapies, supported by international clinical practice.
Regarding drug reimbursement, Eugena Tomini stated that the guideline does not define or regulate reimbursement schemes for hormone medications.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, in cooperation with the University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” (QSUT), has approved for the first time an official protocol for hormone therapy for transgender individuals in the Albanian public healthcare system.
