Seasonal allergies have been increasing in recent years and are affecting a growing number of citizens.
“A significant percentage of patients who present to hospitals and outpatient clinics have symptoms of upper respiratory tract allergies, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion,” said Marsela Dervishi, an allergist at the hospital in Vlorë.
Around 30% of outpatient visits are related to seasonal allergies, showing a noticeable increase compared to previous years. The most affected age groups are young people and active adults, but children and the elderly are also not excluded.
Doctors emphasize that allergies should not be neglected. If not treated in time, upper respiratory allergies can develop complications and lead to more serious problems such as chronic sinusitis or involvement of the lower respiratory tract, progressing into more severe forms like allergic asthma.
