Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the invasion of Ukraine might never have happened if Donald Trump had been the U.S. president at the time.
“I cannot disagree with him that if he had been president—if his victory hadn’t been stolen in 2020—then perhaps there wouldn’t have been the crisis in Ukraine that emerged in 2022,” Putin said.
Two days ago, Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social:
“Let’s end this war, which would never have started if I were President! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way—and the easy way is always better.”
Putin’s recent comments and the alignment of his rhetoric with Trump’s, repeating the false claim that the 2020 election was “stolen,” are likely to further fuel speculation about a possible meeting between the two leaders.
