Rama ‘erupts’ against several mayors: Leave the communities and come to Tirana

Edi Rama delivered a strong critical message toward several mayors during an event on urban infrastructure, accusing them of failing to stay close to the communities they govern and instead traveling to Tirana even during working days.

In his speech, the Prime Minister said he has received numerous complaints from citizens regarding local leaders who leave their municipalities before the end of the working week, describing the practice as unacceptable.

Without naming specific individuals, Rama warned that if the situation continues, he may be forced in the future to publicly disclose the names of the mayors against whom complaints have been raised.

According to him, the complaints mainly come from municipalities in the south and southeast of the country, particularly along the Tirana–Korçë axis.

The Prime Minister called on local leaders to remain closer to citizens and not to leave their duties before the official weekend break.

“With a remark for some of the mayors—I don’t want to name them here, they have become a bit of a problem, I put it mildly, for the community, as they do not stay in their communities throughout the week but come to Tirana even on days when they should be at work there.

It is very important that this practice comes to an end. Not everyone, just some. Next time I will have to mention them by name publicly.

They leave the community and their duties before the official time of rest and come to Tirana. This is neither justifiable nor acceptable.

I believe I have your full understanding to address, as soon as possible, this concern that has come from some of your communities, mainly in the south and southeast of the country, along the Tirana–Korçë axis,” Rama stated.

At the end of his statement, Rama also ironized opposition representatives in local government, adding that they were not the target of his criticism.
