Rama speaks about the protests: “I understand them, I have reflected”

Prime Minister Edi Rama has commented on the protests held in the country in recent weeks, stating that he understands the citizens and that he has reflected on the reasons that brought them out into the streets.

In an interview from Tirana with the British television network “Channel 4”, Rama said that the protests are not necessarily about facts, but rather about citizens’ increasingly higher expectations.

“I have reflected a lot on this protest and have reached the conclusion that, for people, it is not about the facts, and rightfully so, but about the higher expectations that bring them out into the streets. This is not something bad. It is wonderful. That is why I said it is fantastic. So, I understand them,” the Prime Minister said.

Asked how he feels about protesters having been outside his office for nearly 60 days, Rama said this shows that the country has made progress compared to the past.

“It is something wonderful for the country, for society, because on the same boulevard, not long ago, around 15 years ago, people were killed with real bullets while peacefully protesting. For me, the June protest, not the current one, was at the same time a confirmation that the country is at another level and, on the other hand, a very clear reflection of what we need to think about,” he declared.

During the interview, the journalist also asked whether the protests had made him reconsider government policies, particularly those related to the projects in Sazan and Zvërnec, where public reactions began due to concerns over their impact on natural habitats, including flamingo populations.

In response, Rama replied by asking: “Which policies?” without providing any further comment on the projects.
