Revolution in dentistry: Material developed that restores tooth enamel

An international team of researchers has developed a new protein-based material that could help restore the structure and strength of damaged tooth enamel, opening up a potential new approach to treating dental erosion and tooth sensitivity, according to Nature Communications.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with scientists from other institutions across Europe and the United States.
The research was led by Dr. Abshar Hasan and Prof. Alvaro Mata.
The researchers developed a biomimetic protein matrix — a material that mimics the natural way tooth enamel forms during tooth development.
When applied to the surface of a damaged tooth, the material acts as a supporting framework where new mineral crystals can grow, using elements naturally present in saliva, such as calcium and phosphate.
In laboratory tests, the material helped create new enamel-like layers, restoring some of its key characteristics, including hardness, resistance to wear, and microscopic structure.
The researchers also tested its durability against factors that mimic everyday tooth use, such as brushing, chewing, and exposure to acidic substances.
However, the scientists emphasize that this technology is not yet an available treatment for patients.
The results have been achieved primarily under laboratory conditions, and human clinical trials are still needed to establish its safety and long-term effectiveness.
According to the researchers, this approach could eventually offer a more regenerative alternative to traditional treatments, such as dental fillings or materials that merely protect existing enamel, particularly for patients experiencing enamel erosion and tooth sensitivity.
