An Argentine man shocked after undergoing a vasectomy instead of gallbladder surgery

An Argentine man experienced the shock of his life when he went in for what he thought was a gallbladder removal surgery, only to discover that doctors had performed a vasectomy (blocking the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles).

Jorge Baseto went to Florencio Díaz Provincial Hospital in Córdoba, Argentina, for the gallbladder operation. The surgery was initially scheduled for Tuesday, February 28, but for some reason was postponed to Wednesday.

On the day of the surgery, hospital staff took him from his room to the operating theater without asking any questions or checking his medical records. The doctors did not review his chart and simply performed the surgery scheduled for that day: a vasectomy.

When the 41-year-old woke up, he had no idea what had happened. Later, a doctor came in to attend to him and, upon seeing his medical chart, delivered the shocking news: he had undergone a vasectomy instead of gallbladder surgery.

Jorge sought explanations about how the mistake occurred and what could be done to reverse the vasectomy. The doctors blamed each other and told him not to overdramatize, saying he could still have children through artificial insemination. Given his age and the diameter of the severed tubes, the chances of reversing the vasectomy were very slim, so attempting it was not considered worthwhile.

“It’s very strange because my chart clearly said ‘gallbladder’ everywhere. All they had to do was read it; you didn’t need to be a scientist to understand,” Jorge told Argentine media. “I don’t want to point fingers, but no one here is taking responsibility. They focus on saying, ‘Don’t make it so dramatic, you can still have kids via insemination,’” he added.

Although Jorge is already the father of two sons, he is now in a new relationship and hopes to have a child with his partner in the future. Naturally, they would have preferred to conceive naturally, but now artificial insemination is their only option.
