In the last five years, 22 schools in the Korçë region have been shut down due to a decline in the number of students. Villages such as Dardhë, Boboshticë, and Polenë are facing depopulation as a result of emigration and low birth rates.
Emigration is emptying these villages. In Dardhë, Boboshticë, and Polenë, the number of students has only been shrinking.
Schools are closing one by one, and over the past five years, 22 of them have ended up with padlocks on their doors instead of students.
Antonia Caprazi, a former teacher from the village of Boboshticë, recalls with sadness that the school there once had nearly 200 pupils, but now it has been shut down.
This problem has also reached the village of Polenë, where this year even the few remaining students will no longer attend their local school but will have to continue their education in another one.
The Local Directorate of Education in Korçë has acknowledged this grim situation, justifying the closures with the ongoing drop in student numbers. The main factors behind it are emigration and the low birth rate.
