After a fatal crash, South Korea will remove concrete barriers near runways. South Korea will replace the concrete barriers used at seven airports across the country following a December plane crash that claimed the lives of 179 people.

Seven airports will also modify their runway safety zones after a review of all South Korean airports conducted in the wake of the crash — the deadliest in the country’s history.

The Jeju Air plane was bringing passengers home from Thailand after Christmas when it made an emergency landing at Muan Airport and exploded after hitting a concrete barrier at the end of the runway.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, but aviation safety experts had previously stated that the death toll could have been much lower had the plane not collided with the concrete barrier.
